British Royal Navy flags

The British Royal Navy Ensign (known as the White Ensign) is the official flag of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom. It features a white field with the Cross of St George — a bold red cross — and the Union Flag in the upper canton (top left quarter), representing the Navy's historic role as the senior service of the Crown.

The White Ensign has been flown exclusively by Royal Navy warships and shore establishments since 1864, when the Admiralty consolidated the three historic naval ensigns. It is flown at the stern of all commissioned Royal Navy vessels and at naval shore establishments throughout the United Kingdom and overseas. The ensign is hoisted at 0800 and lowered at sunset in accordance with naval tradition.

In British flag precedence, the White Ensign holds the highest position among the three armed service ensigns, reflecting the Royal Navy's status as the senior service. The Union Flag takes precedence over all service flags and is used at naval funerals in place of the White Ensign.

The White Ensign may only be flown by commissioned Royal Navy warships and shore establishments. Unauthorised use of the White Ensign is prohibited under the Merchant Shipping Act. Civilian vessels and yacht clubs use the Blue or Red Ensign instead.
