Flag format

Explaining flag formats

Flags are by definition lightweight and required to float in the wind.  The single layer print or stitched through format with a mirror image on reverse is the standard format and works best.

Remember a flag is a moving object and any text or image is easily recognisable in both left to right and mirror image format because of the constant movement of the fabric. This is the only format of standard flag format we recommend for optimum visibility, durability and flyability.

Our PRINTED flags using quality strong knit polyester 115gsm (NOT sheet nylon) and our traditional STITCHED flags are made using quality UK Ministry of Defence specification run-resistant woven polyester.

Each flag is finished with a strong canvas, rope and toggle as standard (other finishes are available)

Flag formats and what works best for you

Single layer - woven and knit polyester

Where flags are fully PRINTED, flags are single layer, printed through with mirror image on reverse with optimum show through.

Where flags are fully stitched, flags are single layered, stitched and appliqued through with mirror image on reverse (please note that in the case of some national and brand flags, the front would be the same as the back in any case).

Double layer (bagged) - all fabrics

Double layered flags are less common than single layered flags and are made by taking two printed or stitched flags and sewing them together with a block-out liner between the two outer layers.

Each side will read correctly with minimal light showing through and double layered flags can be used indoors or outdoors. However, the extra weight will affect their flying and make them sag or "pillow" and from years of trial and error in supplying insistent clients with this format - despite our own reservations and the concensus that a single layer print or stitch through format would have been much more suitable - the feedback is always the same - that a single layer flag would have looked better and lasted longer.  We do not recommend flags in this format.

Single and double layer COTTON flags

Cotton and linen fabrics are the exception to the rule.  There is no print-through to these fabrics, so the fabrics are only ever one sided with very little, if any, show-through to the reverse.

We print detail to two panels and stitch them back to back (sometimes with an interlining, depending on the show through and shading of detail from one side to the other) with the detail facing left to right on both sides.  This works best for small FLAGS (generally up to a max 1yard).

Banner formats

Single layer

When displaying a printed single layered banner, the back will show the mirror image. Most banners are produced in this manner. As they are lighter in weight, they will "flutter" in the wind, which will catch the passerby’s eye; this is one of the purposes of the banner.

Double layer (bagged)

Double layered banners read correctly on both sides. They usually include a third layer of lining made of either lightweight Tyvek* (*cannot be exposed to high heat through ironing or drying) or the heavier and more lightfast blockout nylon to minimise light showing through. Since double-sided banners are typically displayed with tension, the extra weight only minimally affects the way it flies. However, the banner arms may be affected as the banner weight is significant greater with double-sided banners.
