Masonic banner restoration
Repairs and refurb before and after
This banner was sent to us in a serious state of disrepair. The ground silk was rotten, weak, stained and frayed and someone in their wisdom had 'lined' the banner in a thick upholstery lino/vinyl which has weakened the integrity of the banner further over time.
To add to this the banner had been rolled and stored with the backing so that the handpainted detail on the banner had cracked and fallen away from the fabric. The fringe and tassels has disintegrated and whilst overall the banner was in a very poor state, we took the plunge and carefully removed all the details and appliqued it to a new three layer strong ground of fabric, front and back. We added new piping and fringe, new tab tops and created a new cord to be draped over the display pole.
We dilligently matched the paint colours with new water based acrylics and patched up the missing paint work knowing that whilst we'd possibly never be able to completely remove the creases and cracks we felt confident we could improve on its deriorated state. We handpainted the detail in layers - each taking time to be prepared and dried - and then sealed it with a flexible fabric sealant.
We're confident this banner will last another 50 years!
